Miles, McBride, Ramsey, McQuillan, Owens and Walter to be Honored on June 24


GLASSBORO – The South Jersey Football Coaches Association has announced its Class of 2009 Hall of Fame inductees.

To be inducted will be: Pete Miles (High School Coach), Turk McBride (Active Professional Player), Derrick Ramsey (Retired Pro Player), Bob McQuillan (Distinguished Service), Dr. John Owens (Legends), and John Walter (legends).

The recipients will be honored during an induction banquet on Wednesday, June 24, at 6 p.m., at Masso’s Caterers in Glassboro, NJ. Tickets for the banquet are $25 and may be obtained by calling (856) 582-0212.

Pete Miles (High School Coach)
The long-time Delran High football coach, Miles’ teams have posted more than 100 career victories with the Bears winning South Jersey Group 2 championships in 1987, 1989 and 1990. He has coached many outstanding players through the years, including former stars Bill Duff and Alex Lewis. Coach Miles is graduate of Glassboro State College.


Turk McBride (Active Professional Player)
A 2003 Woodrow Wilson High graduate and former two-way star for the Tigers, McBride is currently a defensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League. He played his college ball at the University of Tennessee and was selected in the second round (54th overall) in the 2007 NFL draft. At Tennessee, he earned All-SEC honors as a defensive tackle.


Derrick Ramsey (Retired Professional Player)
A Camden High graduate, Ramsey was a former star tight end for the Raiders and Patriots in a nine-year NFL career that spanned 1978 to 1987. He played on the Raiders’ Super Bowl team that defeated the Eagles in 1981, and finished his career with 188 receptions and 21 TD catches. He played his college ball at Kentucky and is currently the Coppin State University Athletic Director.


Bob McQuillan (Distinguished Service)
One of South Jersey’s top coaches in history, McQuillan has served stints at Gloucester Catholic as both a head coach and assistant, West Catholic (Pa.) as a head coach, and Widener as an assistant coach Working with head coach Bill Manlove, McQuillan’s helped Widner’s teams win three Division III national championships in the 1970s. He also was a former player at Gloucester Catholic High in the 1940s.

Dr. John Owens (Legends)
Dr. Owens was a standout running back at both Audubon High in 1958 and 1959 and the University of Pennsylvania from 1960 to 1963. At Audubon, he earned All-Conference and All-South Jersey honors while at Penn, he led the Quakers in rushing his senior season. He is a well-known cardiologist in the region and a prolific golfer who is a member of the Pine Valley Golf Club.

John Walter (Legends)
A former standout tight end and defensive end, Walter led Haddon Township teams to three consecutive South Jersey Group 2 playoff appearances and two Colonial Conference titles from 1979 to 1981, earning All-State honors as a senior. He also was a standout defensive end and linebacker at Penn State, playing on the 1982 national championship team that won the Sugar Bowl and on PSU teams that played in the Fiesta and Aloha Bowls.
